A Kanger or Kangri is a traditional firepot made out of terracotta and encased in a wicker frame. The significance of Kangri is so essential to the culutral essence of Kashmir that its use surpasses its primary heating purpose. Most cultural celebrations and festivals in Kashmir begin with the burning of the auspicious Izband or wild rue. The Kangri in which this rue is burnt is referred to as the Izband Kanger. This Kangri is more ornate than the regular Kangris that are used as portable heating devices. Ornamental wicker rings hanging from the Kangri indicate its ceremonial use.
